ISSN and You: Using ISSN SuperNumber in the Digital Environment

Description: Learn about the work of the US ISSN Center and ways the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) contributes to identification, access, and data linking in print and digital environments worldwide. ISSN is the premier international identifier for serials and other continuing resources in all formats. ISSN was ahead of its time in anticipating the crucial role of identifiers in the digital environment and has evolved well beyond its early role as a number displayed on print journals. Demand for ISSN continues to increase because of its ability to identify and facilitate linking to current, long-dead, or yet-to-be published continuing resources today and in the future semantic web.

Audience: Any library staff members who work with any aspect of serials and other continuing resources (acquisitions, cataloging, ERMs, Open URLs), systems librarians, reference librarians, publishers, subscription agents, online platform providers, and fulltext data.

              

Presenter: Regina Romano Reynolds is ISSN Coordinator at the Library of Congress and director of the US ISSN Center. She is a frequent speaker and writer about ISSN, serials, and the future of bibliographic control; convener of the ISO working group to revise ISO 8:1977, the Presentation of Periodicals; a member of NISO’s PIE-J Working Group to develop recommended practices for the presentation and identification of e-journals. Reynolds received the 1999 ALCTS Ulrich’s Serials Librarianship Award.

"The ISSN Network as an Example of International Cooperative Cataloging" by Regina Romano Reynolds

In this article, Regina Romano Reynolds examines the cooperative nature of the ISSN Network, focusing on the shared ISSN Register, which is an international, cooperative, cataloging venture. She provides an overview of the ISSN Network and the ISSN Register, and the various uses for International Standard Serial Numbers. Data elements in ISSN records are also covered, along with users of and uses for these records.

"Metadata in a Digital Age: New Models of Creation, Discovery, and Use" recorded by Paoshan W. Yue

This article is the report on a preconference held during the 2008 NASIG Annual Conference. It was co-sponsored by NISO (National Information Standards Organization). Yue's report covers presentations given by various speakers on metadata, providing both library and publisher/vendor perspectives.

Two sections in this article of particular interest to serials catalogers are: "ISSN: Linking Data and Metadata" presented by Regina Romano Reynolds of National Serials Data Program at the Library of Congress, and: "Changes in Cooperative Cataloging Standards: Implementation of the CONSER Standard Record" presented by Les Hawkins, who is the CONSER Coordinator at the Library of Congress. Reynolds provided general information about the ISSN program, as well as an update on the status of the new ISSN-L. Hawkins talked about the establishment of the CONSER Standard Record.

MARC Coding for Serials

The North American Serials Interest Group has published a new NASIGuide, "MARC Coding for Serials." The guide was written by Elizabeth McDonald and Beverly Geckle and "focuses on how serial MARC records differ from records for other formats."
